Lately I have been exploring the idea of ‘value’ and how and why items are deemed ‘valuable’, either by the collective (stocks/pricing) or by the individual (sentiment/emotion).
I took a piece of coral and set a sapphire, pearl and pure silver into it. Most people would say the coral was less valuable than the sapphire I set into it but the reality is this: The coral is completely unique, one of a kind. I have never seen a piece of coral exactly the same as this piece of coral. The sapphire however beautiful, is of a shape and colour I have seen many times before. The coral was picked up by my daughter and given to me as an offering ‘Mum, this has a hole already in it, you should make something from it!’, whereas the sapphire was set in a broken ring that hadn’t been looked at, let alone loved, for several years.
Did setting the sapphire into the coral decrease the value of the sapphire? Did it increase the value of the coral? Do they need each other to create something entirely new and valuable in it’s own right as an art piece and adornment? Does it matter?
The chains are made from brass and stainless steel using a European 4-in-1 chainmaille weave. The versatility of this piece is truly it’s greatest strength. This is like 10 necklaces for the price of one. The chains are designed to be able to be worn in several ways and at several lengths. The coral amulet can be taken off entirely so the chains can also be worn separately.
I adore this piece. I hope you love it as much as I do.
